About Our Bakery

Changing the way people see (and taste!) gluten free has been our mission from the start.  After battling through my own journey to freedom, I felt empowered to bring others with me. I’ve been working together with my husband, Jordan Starr, and family of taste testers to redefine what it means to be gluten free.  As a busy family on the go, having options that everyone can share and enjoy is a must. I know they felt my pain at not being able to celebrate because of my dietary restrictions, and I didn’t want them to suffer too. There had to be a solution; out of that idea, Nece’s GF was born. A revolutionary concept where there is no need to fear cross contamination or flavorless versions of gluten-containing counterparts. This will be a place to revisit memories of hot, fresh baked heaven from childhood; to rediscover the old and find new favorites.

Nece’s will be a place for sharing recipes and our own stories of struggle and victory, between friends, while goodies are purchased. It’s my dream to bring a home for the gluten free community here on the Monterey Peninsula. Since its inception, and through many years of tedious mixing, sampling, and mistakes, Nece’s has been dedicated to bringing products that are flavorful, incorporating freshest and best ingredients on the market with a mission to remain completely free of contamination and compromise. It is our mission to impact our community through connection with our customers and relationships with other local businesses to provide the best gluten free baked goods anywhere.

Beginning in February 2019, we began serving our community our best products directly from our licensed home kitchen. We built a fiercely loyal customer base and met so many awesome customers and fellow entrepreneurs over more than a year of operating. We sold over 150,000 cookies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, and more! Then, in March 2020, the first of the COVID shutdowns hit and we were forced to shift our focus to the future of Nece’s. We entered and won the 2020 CSUMB Startup Challenge (Mainstreet Division) that May, infusing some funds into our young business. More importantly, we began to hope for something much bigger.

My husband joined me full time. We built a website to accommodate our growing product list and burgeoning customer base. Jordan began honing a wholesale strategy to continue to bring in consistent revenue in the absence of walk-up business. We want Nece’s products in all the best coffee shops, delis, and marketplaces on the Central Coast, but we cannot produce enough out of our home kitchen (with one 20-year-old oven!) to keep up with the demand. We have yet to set up a tasting that did not result in securing an account. We are now turning away business daily, and have frozen sales to new business to business partners. Being a dedicated gluten free company means in order to best serve our customers, we have to take our little company and go BIG. We have been blessed to open our first location in May of 2022 where we have expanded our menu and been able to grow and experiment with new recipes!

We want to serve our local gluten free community, as well as countless local businesses that could feature Nece’s products. You may not recognize our brand yet, but you will. What we may lack in corporate brand recognition, we make up for in intelligence, integrity and, most importantly, passion. We are putting everything we have into this. This is our one chance. This is our dream. Your help will make it a reality, and we will be forever grateful.

With love and blessings,
Sharque “Nece” Starr
